How to Stay Healthy – Mended Hearts

How to Stay Healthy

During the winter months when many people are indoors and it seems like everyone is sniffling and coughing, it can be difficult to avoid those who are sick.  You can increase your chances of having a healthy fall and winter by getting the annual flu vaccine and by practicing healthy habits like the ones below.

  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with a tissue or your arm.
  • Stay home from school and work if you are exhibiting symptoms.
  • Frequently disinfect and wipe down surfaces at home, school and work.
  • Avoid contact with others who are sick.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and if that’s not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods and drinking lots of fluids.

In addition to following the above guidelines, people should get a flu vaccine at the beginning of every season.  Different flu vaccines are approved for use in different groups of people.  If you have any questions you should always check with your medical provider, but in general the flu shot is approved for use in children as young as 6 months of age and in most adults.  Flu shots also are recommended for use in pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions.  The nasal spray flu vaccine is approved for use in non-pregnant individuals and children and adults aged 2 through 49 years of age.
