Atrial Septal Defects (ASD)

An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a common type of congenital heart defect that occurs when a hole forms in the wall that separates the heart’s two upper chambers or atria.  ASDs are one type of congenital heart defect (CHD) and they make up 5% to 10% of all the heart problems babies can be born with; it is more common in girls than boys.

CHDs are the most common type of birth defect in the U.S. affecting 1 in 100 children (40,000 annually).
